Students are ONLY allowed to take 1 module at any one time, which will lead to a maximum of 2 modules for each exam sitting.

Students have to complete the final stage in a maximum duration of three years.

PJ 330 - Project will run for a duration of 6 months.

* Please note that UOP BSc (Hons) in Computing will have 2 Core Modules - IS352 System Development and PJ330 Project with effect from Term 3 2003 onwards.

This update will not affect all existing students (students registerd and started class before 29th Aug 2003). All new students registering and starting class on 29th Aug 2003 onwards will need to abide to this new syllabus.

Important:
With effect from 22nd October 2004, students studying UoP BSc Computing are to be advised that the 10-credit point module IT356 - Human Computer Interface would no longer be offered. The new 20-credit point module IT359 - Human Computer Interaction Design will be offered.

IS352 - Systems Development (compulsory unit - 20 credits)

Introduction to Advanced System Development Methodologies, Information Engineering, Soft System methodologies, Object-Oriented methodologies. Appreciation of the various analysis and design techniques, Comparative studies of the different methodologies.

 

PJ330 - Project (compulsory unit - 20 credits)

A choice of implementing IT solutions or research, on contemporary subjects of relevance to the industry. The emphasis is on documentation of the learning experience provided by an independent probing of a pre-defined problem / subject area.

Elective Modules

 

IT350 - Distributed Networks (elective unit - 20 credits)

Data communication theory, Client server architecture, ISO/OSI model, Distributed information systems and Distributed database, LAN,WAN,VAN.

IT353 - Information Management (elective unit - 20 credits)

Evolution of Information Systems Management, Strategic role of Information System in business, IS planning approaches, Management issues in IS management function, Outsourcing, Centralization and decentralization of IS, IS security issues and Risk Handling.

IT354 - Database Design and Management (elective unit - 20 credits)

Database models, implementation of models, relational databases, Database performance measurement and tuning, Expert and Object Oriented database, Database Management.

IT355 - Object-Oriented Programming and Design (elective unit - 10 credits)

The objective of this module is to provide an appreciation of the importance of quality in software quality assurance, o introduce concepts and techniques in object-oriented design and to allow students to be able to implement an application using object-oriented programming language.

IT357 – E-Commerce (elective unit - 20 credits)

Concept of Electronic Commerce (EC) and its implications in the business environment, Applications of EC, Popular EC models including the specifications of an EC environment in terms of the infrastructure requirements as well as other resources, appreciation of an EC interface tool, issues involved in the setting up and use of an EC environment from the business and client perspectives.

IT 359 - Human Computer Interaction Design ** (elective unit - 20 credits)

Human Computer Interaction is a multi-disciplinary unit concerned with the design, implementation and evaluation of the interface between human users and computer systems, and the major phenomena which influence these elements, including human psychological elements (theories of cognitive processes and empirical analysis of human behaviour), engineering (production of interactive products) and some of the socio-technical phenomena (e.g. computer supported co-operative work and the corresponding organisational considerations).
